The witches ball is still used today in England. In the 19th century is when they started to appear in America being found in gardens being referred to as a gazing ball. They are used with the intention of protecting the household by placing in a window or on top of a vase or stand.
Legends say evil spirits are attracted to the beauty of the glass. By touching the surface, they are pulled inside and trapped within the webs becoming forever trapped and protecting you and your home from harm. It is also said that the reflection of the mirrors within the witches ball prevents a witch from entering a room. Another tradition referring to the evil eye includes attracting its gaze and preventing any curses from entering the home or harming its inhabitants.
